Troubleshooting & Repairs

If you are having a problem with your computer or network or Internet connection then you have come to the right place.

From time to time computers can play up, whether that is from too much or the wrong sort of software (potentially including malicious software [commonly known as “viruses”] or cryptomining) taking up system resources or by being “hacked” because of inadequate security and/or inadequate security knowledge of the PC user(s), or by faulty hardware. I have the hardware, software and knowledge necessary to diagnose most of these problems. I say “most” and not “all” because there are so many different motherboard and CPU combinations that in the case of a motherboard and/or CPU problem it is not practical to have all the required hardware to tell which part(s) is/are at fault but I can likely replace both of them (in a custom-built desktop PC) easily enough. In the case of a proprietary desktop PC I am less likely to be able to source a motherboard for it, but I might be able to. If the CPU is the problem then I am more likely to be able to replace it. Whatever the problem is, I can almost certainly provide a solution, even if that means a new PC or an upgrade.

Before contacting me, there are some questions I will likely ask that may be worth considering:

  • What is the problem/error?
  • Is the problem/error repeatable and if so, how?
  • What recent changes have been made, or what has the computer done prior to the problem/error occurring?
  • What (if anything) have you tried to fix the problem/error and what was the result?

NB: If you have accidentally deleted files or accidentally wiped a storage device please see the data recovery page.

General troubleshooting

Often problems can be resolved by restarting the computer or router.

Increasingly frequent powering off

If your computer has been turning itself off and it has been getting more frequent over time it could be due to overheating because of a build-up of dust on a heat sink. I can fix this.

Speed problems

If the problem is your computer has become slower then you can buy a new or second hand computer which might be worth it, depending on the age of the computers, but the problem is probably one of software and can probably be fixed by removing software or adding memory/RAM or defragmenting the HDD (hard disk drive). I can help with this.
